Who coined the phrases "World War 1" and "World War 2"?
Q. The Great War was what the 1914-1918 conflict was called during its time. Presumably "World War II" caused The Great War to be renamed World War I? When did this happen, and who renamed the Wars? It has always seemed perverse to me that we started giving numbers to our greatest conflicts, like we are expecting them to continue in a series, and want to give them some sort of marketing sheen.

A. It sounds like something Churchill would've done, but I remember reading (somewhere) that it was the Germans who started using the expression shortly after the start of WWII. Harry Truman subsequently more or less popularized it in the States. I haven't any sources to cite for any of this, I'm afraid.

I need my paper graded! Grade it? ill do start!?
Q. I had only one superstition. I made sure to touch all the bases when I hit a home run. --Babe Ruth I never doubted my ability, but when you hear all your life you're inferior, it makes you wonder if the other guys have something you've never seen before. If they do, I'm still looking for it. -- Hank Aarons Long considered two of the best baseball players of all time, Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron, forever changed the game with the way they destroyed the baseball and sent them out of the park. Babe Ruth forever changed the game of baseball in American fields because of his record breaking statistics. He hit more than 130 home runs in his career, while Hank Aaron hit nearly one hundred. Both characters are still arguably the best players… [cont.]

A. I guess you want some criticism, so here goes: The following sentence is wrong. "he was drafted to the New York Yankees, where he won 4 World Series championships and 3 World Series championships with the Red Sox" Actually, after Baltimore, he got to the Major Leagues first with the Red Sox, then was traded/sold to New York. There wasn't any "fight" over at bats, since it wasn't even close. This was because Ruth spent his early career as a pitcher. Your comment comparing Ruth's left handed to Hank's cross handed is mixing up 2 different issues. Ruth batted left handed, Aaron batted right handed. It is said that Aaron held the bat cross handed as a youngster (I think before he got to the majors leagues) Ruth didn't "play any spot… [cont.]

What do think of Cubs Pitcher Carlos Zambrano's comments about the Cubs needing a new Ballpark? Read on->?
Q. No more Wrigley? Cubs ace asks for a new ballpark new york (AP) Standing in the plush visitors clubhouse of Yankee Stadium, Carlos Zambrano made a plea for Chicago to replace Wrigley Field. You come into a ballpark like this and you see great things, the Cubs ace told The Associated Press on Saturday before his team s 10-1 exhibition loss at the sparkling ballpark in the Bronx. You wish that Chicago d build a new stadium for the Cubs, he said. Built in 1914 and home to the Cubs since 1916, Wrigley Field is the second-oldest major league stadium, trailing only Boston s Fenway Park (1912). Fans in Chicago still flock to see the ivy-covered walls and keep alive Harry Caray s tradition of singing Take Me Out to the Ball Game during… [cont.]

A. Like some of the previous respondents, I too have very fond memories of Wrigley Field. I attended my first game with my father in 1969, and fell in love with the experience immediately. I've seen about 200 games there over the last 40 years, and have too many memories to mention them all. I've seen a no-hitter (Milt Pappas), I was there when the lights went on for the first time, I got to see the first playoff game in 39 years for the Cubs (a 13-0 Cubs win in game 1 of the 1984 NLCS) and I was there the day the Cubs retired Ron Santo's #10. And while I love the experience of sitting in my seat watching a ballgame, the moment I leave my seat to go get something to eat or drink or to use the men's room, I am reminded just how outdated the… [cont.]

A. US obviously. Empires don't build themselves and all that. It's cute how some Americans are completely oblivious to the factual truth about WW2 and US involvement in it, I wonder if they know how dumb they sound when they something like we saved you from the Germans in WW2 when the US didn't enter the war until the very end, and profited off of the destruction of Europe at the hands of Germany until it was no longer politically expedient.

Q. Winnie-the-Pooh, commonly shortened to Pooh Bear and once referred to as Edward Bear, is a fictional bear created by A. A. Milne. The character first appeared in book form in Winnie-the-Pooh (1926) and The House at Pooh Corner (1928). Milne also included several poems about Winnie-the-Pooh in the children s poetry books When We Were Very Young and Now We Are Six. All four volumes were illustrated by E. H. Shepard. The hyphens in the character's name were later dropped when The Walt Disney Company adapted the Pooh stories into a series of Winnie the Pooh featurettes that became one of the company's most successful franchises worldwide. The Pooh stories have been translated into many languages, notably including Alexander Lenard's Latin… [cont.]

Q. One of the most influential art movements (1907-1914) of the twentieth century, Cubism was begun by Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1882-1973) and Georges Braque (French, 1882-1963) in 1907. They were greatly inspired by African sculpture, by painters Paul Cezanne (French, 1839-1906) and Georges Seurat (French, 1859-1891), and by the Fauves. In Cubism the subject matter is broken up, analyzed, and reassembled in an abstracted form. Picasso and Braque initiated the movement when they followed the advice of Paul Cezanne, who in 1904 said artists should treat nature "in terms of the cylinder, the sphere and the cone." There were three phases in the development of Cubism: Facet Cubism, Analytic Cubism, and Synthetic Cubism. After fauvist beginnings, [cont.]
