An election is a formal decision-making process by which a population chooses an individual to hold public office. Elections have been the usual mechanism by which modern representative democracy operates since the 17th century. Elections may fill offices in the legislature, sometimes in the executive and judiciary, and for regional and local government. This process is also used in many other private and business organizations, from clubs to voluntary associations and corporations. The universal use of elections as a tool for selecting representatives in modern democracies is in contrast with the practice in the democratic archetype, ancient Athens. Elections were considered an oligarchic institution and most political offices were filled using sortition, also known as allotment, by which officeholders were chosen by lot. Electoral reform describes the process of introducing fair electoral systems where they are not in place, or improving the fairness or effectiveness of existing systems. Psephology is the study of results and other statistics relating to elections (especially with a view to predicting future results). To elect means "to choose or make a decision" (For example, in contract law, if one party breaches the agreement, the other party may "elect" whether to continue or repudiate the contract), and so sometimes other forms of ballot such as the referendum are referred to as elections, especially in the United States. GNU Free Documentation License How do the election candidates get selected to run in the final race? Q. How do I get Obama in the election race rather than Clinton? Is there a pre election that decides who is the final candidate? Clinton is a hypocrite and I can't stand her. Obama is the only one that I can see that actually has some common sense. Some states require party registration in order to participate. Your best bet is to contact your county elections board, look for their number in the blue pages of your phone book. They'll be able to tell you the specifics. Also, beyond voting, you can visit your candidates web site and find ways to volunteer, contribute, and organize. Answered by Hawv - Thu Aug 23 15:05:16 2007 How important do you consider this election? Q. I'm not asking who you're voting for. I'm not asking that at all, so please avoid any conversation of the sort. My question is this: Compared to other elections in US history, how important do you consider the 2008 elections? Do you think that the outcome of this election, whatever it may be, will without a doubt change the United States? Asked by Bran the Man - Thu Aug 28 04:20:16 2008 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments A. The current administration has spent the last seven years systematically destroying the normal functioning of government, destroying the ability of the executive agencies to do their respective jobs, destroying the legislative process, and ruining the system of checks and balances. The new president has a choice: seize the massive amounts of power the Bush administration has wrongly accumulated in the office of the president, or return our government to balance? In this respect, this is the most important election in modern history. We desperately need a return to accountability, a return to real debate in the Congress, and a return to non-political nomination of federal judges. Answered by Adam B - Thu Aug 28 04:35:50 2008 How exactly does a United States presidential election work?
Q. How does a candidate win? Do they win based on the total number of votes for them? If so, how come Al Gore didn't win the 2000 election? He had a larger popular vote. What does it mean to carry more states? Asked by Special K - Sun Oct 12 23:43:12 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. It isn't necessarily the total number of votes that decides a presidential election...its the total number of electoral college votes that decides the winner. Each state gets a number of electoral votes equal to the number of senators and congressmen so the most heavily populated states who have more congressmen and senators get the most electoral college votes (ie: CA, NY, FL, IL, MI, OH, PA, etc). The electors (members of the electoral college, chosen at the state level) then pledge to vote for the candidate who win that state's popular vote. Winner takes all...there's no apportioning the electors (ie: 51-49 if the popular vote is 51%-49%). A candidate needs an absolute majority of 270 electoral votes to win the election. With that… [cont.] Answered by ajsnskool - Mon Oct 13 00:15:55 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Election" An election is the democratic process whereby votes are collected in order to select a governing party.
