What are the differences in symptoms between appendicitis and upset stomach for kids?
Q. My daughter is 5 years old and sometimes has an upset stomach. My wife and I worry that we might not be able to tell if she had appendicitis. Her pain usually lasts a few hours. I understand appendicitis is a more chronic pain but would still like to know any other signs to watch out for. Thankyou!

A. that can be difficult to catch in kids. the biggest differentiator between the two would be a fever. typical appendicitis symptoms include a fever where typical upset stomach may not. other key appendicitis symptoms are: loss of appetite, generalized pain in the abdomen (the pain starts as a generalized ache and then becomes more localised to the lower right), nausea, sensitivity to touch in the lower right quadrant.

How likely are people to get appendicitis?
Q. I am extremely paranoid about getting appendicitis because my husband had it and almost died from it. Ever since then, I have been really scared every time I get any kind of pain near my lower right abdomen. What are the odds of getting appendicitis? Also can I have mine removed without having appendicitis?
Asked by Julia Washington - Sun Jun 21 08:02:09 2009 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments

A. I'm very sorry to hear about your husband. My husband died from cancer when my children were young, so I know what you're going through. Just different circumstances, is all. The best thing you can do is talk to your doctor about your fears. Your doctor can best tell you how to avoid appendicitis and if yours can be taken out without it being imflammed.

What exactly does appendicitis pain feel like?
Q. How exactly would you describe appendicitis pain? Is it more nauseating or cramp-like? How does it start out feeling, and how does it feel toward the end (pain scale 1-10)? How quickly does it intensify? First hand experience is ideal.
Asked by iLOVEpirates - Mon Oct 13 22:56:09 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It hurts like hell, and you will be nauseated enough that you will vomit!!! The pain can get unbearable in a matter of minutes!!! Pain scale of 1-10 don't even come close, if it ruptures!!! The only pain that I can compare it to, is 'childbirth'--only not as long, because if it stayed that bad for as long as it takes for some babies to be born, you wouldn't live to tell about it!!! For me, that was true (about the pain, sickness, vomiting & rupturing), but if you don't know what it 'feels' like to have a child, just trust me!!! Go to the emergency room as soon as you can get there!!! If it isn't appendicitis, there is something else very wrong!!!

A. I can only relate my own story and let you draw your own conclusions on how to advocate for your child. Years ago, I started having upper right abdominal pain and was thoroughly tested for gallbladder and liver problems (liver was inflamed but gallbladder was fine)..two months passed..I was on narcotics for the pain...finally the pain was in my lower and upper right abdomen. The docs said I was constipated from the narcotics (I wasn't) and that is why both areas hurt now...two more months passed...I became very angry and insisted they do something. They reluctantly operated to "remove my gallbladder"...I came out of surgery minus one infected appendix (they called it a "chronic smoldering retroceceol appendicitis"). Nothing was wrong with… [cont.]

A. I don't know the exact details, but i do know that appendicitis causes your appendix to swell to an extraordinary size, causing it to eventually burst. The bursting will release poisons into your body, killing you. You have to have your appendix removed before it has a chance to burst.

A. Symptoms Appendicitis can cause a variety of symptoms that may change over time: Early on, the most common symptom is an aching pain around your navel that often shifts later to your lower right abdomen. As the inflammation spreads to nearby tissues, the pain may become sharper and more severe. Eventually, the pain tends to settle in your lower right abdomen near your appendix at what's known as McBurney point. This point is about halfway between your navel and the top of your right pelvic bone. But the location of your pain may vary, depending on your age and the position of your appendix. Young children or pregnant women, especially, may have appendicitis pain in different places. What makes pain worse If you apply gentle… [cont.]

A. absolutely, a ruptured appendix can infect all the surrounding organs, ovaries/tubes/intestines. She is telling you the truth. I have seen patients who have infertility from ruptured appendix in the past. The fact that other men have had no luck may or may not be relevant. Be happy you and your brother are adopted into a fine family. They got to choose both of you. Stop fretting about being adopted. Many children would love to be in your shoes.

Writing a story in which a character has an appendicitis. Need details on symptoms and how they effect person?
Q. I'm writing a story in which someone has an appendicitis. I know that one symptom is pain in the stomach and right side, and I've read the general symptoms like nausea and stuff, but what I'd like to know is how it can progress from a small pain to the point of frantic hospitalization. Like, how bad do the symptoms get before the actual appendix bursts? And when it does burst, does the person fall unconscious, or can they be awake when it happens and stay awake? I just need some details!

A. Hi, I do not have first hand knowledge of appendicitis per se. However, when conducting my own research for writing reports, ebooks etc., I have found the article directories such as ezinearticles a great place to gather information. Log on to ezinearticles, pick the health category and see if there is a close sub category. Either way, type in your keyword such as appendicitisor appendicitis symptoms and the relevant articles will be listed for you. If there is not enough information in the article, click on the authors bio and visit their sites where you are likely to find the info you need. Hope this helps

A. that depends on some factors which you have not given detail of. did this rupture if so then the stay can be much longer. if this was removed with out rupture then the stay can range greatly as well but overall the person will be released from the hospital in 3 days. if there was no rupture or other complications.

How long is an appendix typically sick before symptoms of appendicitis?
Q. I got appendicitis back in September. I'm just curious about how long my appendix was probably sick before symptoms. I was 11 1/2 when I first had symptoms. Thanks!
Asked by ardesigns97 - Sun Feb 15 19:31:13 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There is no average time. There is a condition doctors call a chronic appendix, where the appendix will become inflamed and irritable, and then settle back down again. Then there are folks who are sick for days without suspecting it's the appendix. And then there are those who wake up dog sick in the morning, and must part company by supper time. I've even seen a few that simply flared up in a few hours. It depends on what set the appendix off, and the person as well. Your appendix wasn't sick before you had symptoms. It was managing quite well until whatever it was happened to stop it. Appendicitis isn't usually a long lingering malfunction of the appendix.

A. Lower pain is a sign, but it's usually really really bad pain! Also throwing up and the pain is less when you bring your knees up to your chest. I'm not sure why you get it and I'm not sure doctors know why either. I don't know if you're a guy or a girl, but I've had an ovarian cyst rupture and I thought it could be appendicitis. I was fine though and needed no medical treatment! If it gets bad, get to the hospital! ~Sarahybethy

A. The most specific physical findings in appendicitis are rebound tenderness (when you push down on the area, it doesn't hurt as bad as when you let up after pushing), pain on percussion (place your hand on the area and tap the back of your hand), and rigidity of the right lower quadrant of the abdomen. As everyone else has said, they will likely draw a blood panel (though the physical exam is much more important, because the blood panel changes could come from any part of the body. Also, they will surgically remove the appendix if it is inflamed. The surgery has become very advanced, so there will be little to no scarring and minimal pain.

Does appendicitis pain come on gradually or all of a sudden?
Q. For the past two days, I have had sharp intermittent pains in my lower-right abdomen. I know pretty much nothing about appendicitis and am wondering if I might just be in an early stage (where it hasn't actually ruptured yet). To those of you who have had it, did it come on gradually or just appear all of a sudden? If it was a gradual thing, how long before you realized it was time to see a doctor? Thanks in advance.
