How should I run a home run derby for kids?
Q. I m running a home run derby for little league on opening day. How many outs should kids get, and how do you score points with a hit if the kids can t hit home runs?
Asked by joe - Wed Mar 25 18:42:01 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Each kid should get 10-12 outs. Since at that age it's difficult to hit a "home run" (i.e. over-the-fencer), it's a good idea to mark certain distances as different point zones, with the further distances being worth more points. You can take some simple white packaging tape and outline areas in the field as follows: Infield hit / ground ball = 0 points & 1 out 90ft-to-110ft = 5 points, 1 out 110ft-to-130ft = 10 points, 1 out 130ft-150ft = 15 points, 1 out 150ft-170ft = 20 points, 1 out 170ft-190ft = 25 points, 1 out 190ft=200+ft = home run = 30 points, 0 outs This can be used to get to a "final two" showdown. Then, each gets ten outs in the final round. Most points wins. When I was in little league my farthest shot (at 11 years old)… [cont.]

What is the best bargain ticket for the Kentucky Derby?
Q. I am going to 2009 derby and want to know a little about the best way to maximize my experience. Where is the best place (bargain wise) to watch the race live. Where to stay when coming in town from Nashville? How early to get there race day? Is the infield the best place to be for a racing and wagering fan?

A. I am posting a link that will give you some information on tickets, where to stay, etc. I am in Franklin, so I am familiar with the route you will take. Every year about 150,000 people attend the Derby and most of the good tickets are far gone by now. You can call Churchill downs office and talk with them about tickets if you like. If you go to the infield you will not be able to see the race. There are many obstructions preventing the view of the track there. I would advise you to get there early, even though the race is late in the day. There is much to see and a lot of excitement. Since I don't know how old you are I will tell you that the infield is mostly college age people and they are there for a party. Lots of drinking, etc. Have a… [cont.]

What did Red Sox fans do during the home run derby last night?
Q. Everyone knows that Red Sox fans are not baseball fans, they are Red Sox fans. They don't watch anything that doesn't involve the Red Sox. So during the Home Run Derby what did you do? Did you put on your pink hat and watch a replay of the '04 Series? Too bad, you missed your boy Ortiz getting roundly booed by Yankee Stadium fans for trying to steal the spotlight from Josh Hamilton.

What are some original fundraiser ideas for a roller derby team?
Q. I'm apart of a team that is hosting a big Battle of the Coast and I'm trying to think of some suggestions other than the everyday car wash idea, you know? I mean these women play derby, we've obviously got a unique side to us, I just can't seem to brainstorm any effective ideas!

A. I never actually figured out how it raised money, but when derby just got going, a lot of leagues were doing full contact musical chairs in bars on skates. We do arm wrestling sometimes. We often do a silent auctions. You'll need some help from sponsors and others donating things. Put together team packages. One year we had a Super Bowling event the day before the Super Bowl. The idea was everyone dress up like super heroes and go bowling. But somewhere along the way, the super heroes costume idea got lost. We had one skater that had a paddle. She raised a lot of money whacking people during events.

A. There is no banked track teams like you saw in Whip It! however you are lucky because Denver is home of two flat track roller derby teams. Most modern day roller derby is done on flat track and is skater ran and trained. Denver is home of the Rocky Mountain Roller Girls who are going to nationals this year. Looks like their next home game though is November 7th. There are also several other great leagues in your area as well! What are they building on the side of the A38 southbound towards Derby from Coxbench to Little Eaton?
Q. There are roadworks happening along the side of the A38 southbound towards Derby's Little Eaton roundabout. They look like 2 platforms built on the slope of the embankment with rails around the top. They could almost be used as small stages for something but that would be madness. Hopefully someone knows what there are. They also look like they are putting in street lighting but I am not sure if these structures are linked to that.
