What are the differences in symptoms between appendicitis and upset stomach for kids?
Q. My daughter is 5 years old and sometimes has an upset stomach. My wife and I worry that we might not be able to tell if she had appendicitis. Her pain usually lasts a few hours. I understand appendicitis is a more chronic pain but would still like to know any other signs to watch out for. Thankyou!

A. that can be difficult to catch in kids. the biggest differentiator between the two would be a fever. typical appendicitis symptoms include a fever where typical upset stomach may not. other key appendicitis symptoms are: loss of appetite, generalized pain in the abdomen (the pain starts as a generalized ache and then becomes more localised to the lower right), nausea, sensitivity to touch in the lower right quadrant.

Why do I get an upset stomach after eating out?
Q. Whenever I eat out at a restraunt, I always get an upset stomach and bloating. It mainly happens with meat products. Steak, a good burger, ribs etc. After 20 or so minutes when I am done with my food, I always get an upset stomach. It swells and well.. turns into "hershey squirts." Now I cook alot of my own BBQ and steaks and never have this problem with the food I cook. Why does this happen?

A. I have the same problem often when I eat out...for me, I think it is that I tend to overeat or eat foods I don't eat as much at home. Also, I think restaurant food may be heavy on the preservatives. Also, if you have salad or fresh vegetables, they may be sprayed with sulfites to keep them fresher, but some people have terrible reactions to them. Also, if you are sensitive to wheat or corn, these are hidden in lots of foods in ways that might surprise you...many people have negative reactions to these. You have my sympathy...it sure takes the fun out of eating out!

What are some ways to soothe a dog's upset stomach besides eating grass?`?
Q. My 12YO dog really wants to go eat grass for his upset stomach. But when he does that he throws up all over the carpet. What are some alternatives for a dog's upset stomach?? Thanks for your help.

A. There are a couple of things you can do to help settle your dog's upset stomach. The first option is to give your dog a little Pepto-Bismol. I don't know how big your dog is, so you should call your vet and ask how much you can give him. Also, your dog needs to be on a bland diet. Boiled chicken and rice is very good and dogs love it. Feed your dog small amounts and make sure he drinks plenty of water so that he stays hydrated. Once your dog starts to feels better, wean him back on to his dog food. If your dog is still lethargic and sick after 3-4 days, I would call the vet and have him checked out. It could be something more than just a virus. Best of luck to your dog. Hope I helped.

What can help my upset stomach caused by my meds?
Q. I suffer from depression and anxiety and I have tried 6 different medicines to deal with it...most of them cause me to have a horribly upset stomach to the point where I feel so nauseous that I have a hard time functioning during the day. I always feel like I'm going to throw up or pass out, etc. My doctors know about this but they can't seem to find a med that will agree with my stomach (I had a disease that was treated but it made my stomach very acidy and messed up, so even foods can upset me easily). Are there any foods, additional pills/vitamins, etc. that will help? I just started a new med this week and I've been on a steady diet of toast, saltine crackers, water and ginger ale for 3 days :( OR, does anyone know of a med that… [cont.]

A. Peppermint tea helps most commonly if the stomach ache is accompanied by nausea but the best tea for a general upset tummy is chamomile tea. It soothes and is gentle. It's also the only type of tea recommended for babies when they are colicky :)

Can I make chicken soup for someone with an upset stomach?
Q. He says he doesn't feel like eating, but I know he needs it. What else can I give him? He has the flu-- upset stomach, fever, headache, all that.
Asked by reba - Wed Jan 17 16:21:24 2007 - - 17 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Plain chicken broth, saltine crackers, very plain foods ar ebest. but usually sick people will start eating again once their body tells them to. Make sure they drink a lot of water ( twice as much as you are normally supposed to) because dehydration can just make a sickness worse. And if they don't eat much for more than a few days, they should go to a doctor.

Can taking ibruprofen cause an upset stomach?
Q. I've had an ear infection for the last few days, and my doctor said I could take an over the counter painkiller. So I've been taking two ibuprofen (Motrin) pills once every 8 hours or so since Friday. My stomach has been upset yesterday and today, and I was wondering if it could be because of the medication. Anybody else have problems with this? It usually doesn't bother me (and I usually take it with food or at least after I've eaten), but I've been taking the maximum dose for 3 days, so I wondered if that would cause a problem.

A. Yes, almost any medication can upset your stomach if you have an empty belly. I take Advil for headaches to muscleaches even ttoothaches It will make you nauseated if you take it on an empty stomach. Try eating a piece of bread or a few crackers even. That should help. Or just take the medication when you eat a meal or snack.
